|| WLUR 91.5 FM Virginia ||"The vocals on Klas’s release To Sleep and Love has that warped Swedish inflection that is probably only valued in the pop world. That said, songs like “Birds” would be welcomed by anyone who appreciates pure pop music or pretty folk. A tiny 2 minute package of winter weather and warm coats suggests that its simple “this winter sure has been tough” is quite an understatement. Such is the rest of the album: Klas is able to say only a little in their clean lyrics while pointing at love and loss. Nightswimmer is the outlier on the cd, featuring distorted vocals and replacing the acoustic guitar with jarring synths, but somehow this works for Klas too. Baby Blue is a lovely take on a ooh-la-la-la 60’s song. Each song is short and almost silly in their sincerity."
|| Bluesbunny Independent Reviews ||"I would love to be shown to be wrong, but from my experience with Swedish artists, there are precious few that you would actually recognise as being even remotely Scandinavian. Why? I blame Morrissey. If anyone has a problem with that, you know my e-mail address. There's not a lot to be said for front man Klas's laconic delivery, asides from the occasional turn of phrase that leaves the listener with a smile on his face. Not entirely dissimilar to fellow abstract Swede Jens Lekman. KLAS, however, draw more from roots-roc k influences. With most songs barely clocking in at two minutes, there's a certain cuteness to these songs that may lead you to listen again. However, no song on the album really stands out from the rest and I think that might well have been the intention. "Nightswimming", though, is simply offensive to the ears. That might have been intentional too. "The Canaries" is a pleasant and incisive piece of twee-pop and the prime contender for the standout track on this album. Short, sweet and to the point. By no means a bad album, it nonetheless lacks that enduring quality that separates the great from the good. This is a good album."
|| FensePost ||"Klas is a super lovable lo-fi twee-ish folk-pop group out of Malmö, Sweden and they write beautiful songs like “I Was A Janitor” that include lyrics like I was a janitor / And life was bad / But when I got my paycheck / Life was good. Their debut album, titled To Sleep And Love, is out now in Europe on Evil Twin and in the states on Series II Records. Klas comes to me via the Series Two Compilation Vol. 1, to which Klas donated four tracks, including “Honda Civic”, “The Fall”, “Under The Rainbow” and the aforementioned “I Was A Janitor”. Their MySpace page boasts four additional tracks including a download for “Nightswimming”, which is a bit more electro-pop than what’s found on the comp. “The Fall” is my favorite off the compilation. The song is a slower, more ballad-like tune that features a great keyboard part and a simple two-chord melody. The guitar part is suspiciously close to the two chord progression of Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees,” and even begins with lyrics A fake plastic watering tank to boot, but the keyboards are what truly set this song apart. From the additional selections, I’m pretty fond of “Baby Blue” and, of course, “Nightswimming”. Klas is yet another great Swedish pop band, enough to make someone like myself fall in love with Swedish pop all over again. I was going to only include “The Fall” but it’s my birthday (at 28, I have now officially hit my “late” twenties!) and I’m feeling generous. "
|| AZLTRON BLOG ||"Klas is a musician from Sweden signed to Series 2 records who is compared to Jens Lekman due to his sense of humor and heartfelt delivery. I know I say this whenever I write about an artist from Sweden, but 9 times out of 10 I am always impressed with whatever Sweden has to offer. Albeit simple and to the point, the young man from Malmo, Sweden uses his hushed voice and engaging simple arrangemets to create soothing atmospheres that are the perfect vehicle for his sometimes ironic, sarcastic, but always heartfelt lyrics. Klas is everything you would want Swedish indie pop to be."
|| You Are So Relevant ||"...includes comparisons to Jens Lekman and Adam Green and I would have to agree. Good stuff here."
|| Indie MP3 ||"Klas are a band based in Malmo, Sweden. To Sleep and Love is their debut album release. The bands music is less indie pop being more country or folk tinged and reminds me mainly of Lloyd Cole & The Commotions. Indeed such was the similarities with the vocals of Klas Sjoberg and Mr Cole's on album opener Skinny Girl I thought I had put on Rattlesnakes by mistake! The comparison actually fades the more you delve into the album which mainly touches down on the alt. country base. There are some variations on the theme such as the experimental sounding Nightswimming but for the most part the album sticks rigidly to the same path throughout. Which is strange as it makes me wonder where the Jesus and Mary Chain and Felt comparisons from reviews of their earlier releases came from! The album is agreeable enough to these ears especially on tracks like Hey Baby, the wonderful Skinny Girl and An Eyeball Of Love but I have to wonder if Klas have done enough to stick their heads above the parapet to warrant peoples attention."
|| It's Not The Bands I Hate, It's Their Fans ||"Klas is a delightful little 5 piece band from Malmö, Sweden that specializes in some very enjoyable lo-fi twee acoustic indie pop. The comparisons to Jens Lekman are somewhat justifiable, especially because lyrics like "all the crap I learned when I was seven is the same crap that I still hold on to" boast that same stylish 'jilted boyfriend' charm that sounds like it's meant to be depressing but actually still manages to put a little bit of a smile to my face. However the more organic approach of this CD begs more of a Lloyd Cole comparison to me than Jens. There's also some deliberate shout-outs to Lou Reed (he lifts a line from the VU's 'Waiting For The Man' on the song Fine Time) as well as R.E.M. (lifting a line from 'Nightswimming' for the song, um, Nightswimming) showing that the band likes to wear their influences on their sleeves, but in a way that is paying homage moreso than simply imitating. Some other highlights are songs like Duck Couples, where vocalist Klas Sjögberg compares his current relationship to the unbreakably eternal relationship that ducks apparently have with each other. Goofy yes, but charming as well. Canaries is a country song about the lengths people will go through to flee a bad relationship. And finally, An Eyeball Of Love is a great way to end the CD, another ode to love (are you starting to sense a pattern here?) and how it's still possible to enjoy a relationship even during the hard times. Although To Sleep And Love is no giant step forward in the world of lo-fi indie rock, it's still an enjoyable album that is worth seeking out and throwing onto the old CD player on a cold winter night. With your loved one."
|| FensePost (again) ||"I covered Klas back in September after receiving a little compilation from Series II Records (read that coverage here) and noted how their style of folk-pop had twee-ish elements to it. But in listening to their full length, To Sleep And Love, I’m hearing a little country influence as well. Sure, it’s the folk side of country, but it is there in songs like “Birds” and “Skinny Girl”. It’s a side that simply wasn’t as prevalent on Series II Compilation Volume 1. And, I believe, this is partly due to songs on To Sleep And Love not being as humorous as tracks like “I Was A Janitor”. There’s a heart-felt tone in the vocal parts of several tracks here and, in a way, it blends with the sometimes humorous and sometimes not style lyrics in a manner that references fellow Swedish artists Jens Lekman and Pelle Carlberg. I find myself saying this a lot lately: Another great Swedish band discovered by Series II Records."
|| Fazer Magazine ||"Klas is a five member band that’s based in Malmo Sweden. With fantastic droll self-deprecating lyrics that loosely quote everyone from Bob Dylan to Paul Simon and a sound like Beck, The Silver Jews, John Cale, Lou Reed, and Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. The album features an electronica song (’Nightswimming’), The Daniel Johnston-esque inspirational song (’Clouds’) and the world’s most creative and heartfelt love song (’Duck Couples’). To Sleep and Love will have you taking the hand of the one you love and slow dancing with him/her for hours with this CD on repeat."
|| Music For Humans ||"Klas is a 5 member band from Malmo Sweden. They make some very cool songs. The songwriting is very interesting and quirky, Klas has humor in his songs that could be compared to fellow Sweden country man Jens Lekman and to Adam Green among others. He has some charm as well. He has a wide variety of influences, including Tom Petty, Nick Lowe and Prince. People have even compared Klas to Lou Reed and Jesus and Mary Chain."
|| Indieville Reviews ||"You know the drill. Strummed acoustic guitars, friendly male vocals, utilitarian rhythm section – plus some occasional keys and bass when friends are willing to help out. This is, by and large, the work of Klas, a cheery pop songsmith with an eye for simple, catchy compositions. To Sleep and Love's tracks are light and airy, each adorned with a set of hooks that ensures recognition, but doesn't necessarily make the record a thoroughly memorable affair. Thus, this album is a pleasant excursion into Klas' world, but it may not see you coming back time after time. Ultimately, the truly infectious pop songs ("The Canaries," "Honda Civic") are outnumbered by the less tent tracks ("Fine Time," "Nightswimming," "An Eyeball of Love"). Klas' quirky lyrics salvage the tracks to some degree, although this will likely appeal primarily to the truly devoted bedroom pop enthusiasts. Calibrate your expectations accordingly.”
