Suena como: My Bloody Valentine, Pale Saints, The Radio Dept."
|| Fense Post ||"Oh! Custer's twee-infuesed pop melodies and romantic reverb-filled vocals give their songs the feel of a post-Smiths band. Originally hailing from Lund, Sweden puts Oh! Custer in the middle of some of the greatest names in indie-pop today. Their latest EP, States is better suited with the 'double EP' description as it contains their first EP, Leaves, as bonus tracks. In fact, the two EPs combined make a decent full-length as Oh! Custer's sound didn't change drastically between the two releases. Often including heavy percussion in the form of drum boxes and tambourines, the band is made up of Josef and Esbjörn. The two currently live in separate cities: Lund, Sweden and Oslo, Norway. The songs are melodic; guitars have a dreamy jangle in the form of live reverb while the vocals are given an echo-y effect. Each song is packed with mopey pop that will easily win over fans—songs like "States" and "So Much Better" are prime examples. States concludes with "Magnolia" before diving into Leaves with "Your Name". The former has an instantly catchy drum box beat and the guitars only enhance that notion, while the vocals here draw direct connections with the aforementioned Morrissey influence. It is clear that the one concludes an EP and the next opens another as "Magnolia" fades out and "Your Name" takes time in beginning again. "Your Name" includes catchy vocal hooks and their most jangle-y guitar riff yet; and that's the biggest difference between the two EPs. Where the guitar in States is given a heavy reverb overdose, Leaves is much more jangle-oriented. Even the vocals have slightly less reverb in Leaves. Still, the distinction is not so extensive that it affects the combined sound, thus making States / Leaves a wonderful double EP, or even debut LP.- Fense"
|| It's A Trap ||"Offhand, Custer, Ohio, USA, springs to mind. This was likely unintentional and fortunately, very few expect a band to be defined by their name, at least not completely. "States" is an EP, and included on the disc is their previous EP release "Leaves". Two for one isn't a bad deal. Throughout the record, jangly guitar, reverb-laden vocals, and somber lyrics make for a sound not unlike the UK's Field Mice. In fact, the title track could be straight off a Sarah Records disc. Unlike the Field Mice however, who are known for dipping into a kind of beautiful comatose tempo, the disc keeps up a steady pace, with some clever hooks and a well-balanced indiepop mentality. Oh! Custer, with only two members, has conjured up a solid, energetic record. Fans of The Legends and Comet Gain should take notice and give this a spin. received 8 out of 10" - Paul Bredenberg
|| IndiePages ||"Although this duo hails from Sweden, this is their second release for an American label (coming out about the same time as their 3" cd on Cloudberry). Like Afraid Of Stars and Celestial (among several others), this band shows that the shoegaze sound is alive and well in Sweden. This duo's sound isn't as densely layered as those other bands, but it does have a definite dreamy quality like Brighter or the Field Mice, thanks to the wispy guitars and reverbed-out vocals. The first six songs on the disc make up the actual "States" EP, while the last five songs are from the band's self-released debut EP from last year. The songwriting isn't too different between the two eras; the earlier material features shorter songs and a more primitive production quality, while the newer songs show the band using a bit more variety to expand their sound. This new label from Nebraska has plans to release lots more Swedish pop, so check 'em out! MTQ=10/11"
|| It's Not The Band I Hate, It's Their Fans ||"Oh! Custer has been described as a "two man social project producing sounds easily mistaken for songs." It is the brainchild of a couple of dudes from Sweden named Josef & Esbjörn and it's a beautiful amalgamation of shoegaze and 80's mope rock. The difference is that their music makes me happier than those genre's would suggest. The songs are actually quite simple, with chorus's that are incredibly easy to memorize and sing along to. The album also plays as one continuous piece, not in a progressive rock sort of way, but the individual songs are held together by sounds of nature and white noise. This is interesting because, although the idea sounds pretentious, the execution of such comes across otherwise. If there is one complaint, it is that the songs all start to sound the same after a while. However, the eleven songs clock in at just over half an hour, which keeps things from sounding monotonous. This is a gratifying little release, with lush, lo-fi arrangements and sonorous melodies designed strictly to entertain. I highly recommend the songs 'Post,' 'Keep It Coming,' and 'Your Name."
|| Cause = Time ||"Oh! Custer is a Swedish outfit making beautiful reverb noise with a healthy dose of shoegaze. Their album was released last year via Series Two Records but brought to my attention very recently. I love listening to this type of music. It makes me nostalgic of all the good things that have happened and things to come. Random note, they're from the same town in Sweden as Radio Dept."
|| 17 Seconds ||"There must be something in the water over there in Sweden. Or something. Anyway, the favourite mainland European country in the blogosphere has come up trumps with another band, Oh! Custer. Again, this was a band I'd been emailed about (to anyone who thinks I've ignored their emails, I haven't, but there's only one of me and this isn't the day job). This is gorgeous indie-pop with both jangling guitars and a gorgeous shimmering of shoegazing, or dream pop, as the North Americans call it. I'm not going to reel off a list of other bands that they sound like, just beg you to judge these three excellent tracks on their own merits and go and buy the album States. "
|| RetroLowFi ||"Their new EP, States/Post is a fully formed slab of shoegazey pop, with enough reverb to make mid-period Lush albums sound positively dry in comparison. And this is how they describe themselves on their MySpace page, lest you confuse their output with actual tangibility: Oh! Custer is a social project/ band producing sounds easily mistaken for songs."
|| Le Blog Du Baron ||"in the style of many late 90s Britpop acts…"
|| Mondo-NYC ||"Beautiful jangly tune from Sweden's Oh! Custer - reminiscent of The Radio Dept. Make sure to check these guys out at NYC Popfest in June!"
|| Azltron ||"I've said it before and I'll say it again, there's something going on in Sweden. Either they've replaced the fluoride in the water with some songwriter enhancing drug or the Swedes are genetically engineering a superior race of musicians that will soon take over the world. Which might not be a bad thing considering the quality of their health care... Musings aside, Oh! Custer wields chiming guitars that evoke the best of those moments in between waking and sleeping. That moment of perfect satisfaction before the alarm goes off, and perhaps the 5 minutes after hitting the snooze. The beats are driving but never jarring, the reverb is as soft and gentle as a violin and the vocals calmly replay the events of our days through a hazy projector."
|| Sound Of Indie ||"Here's yet another catchy Swedish band that has a similar sound to one of my most favorite bands at the moment, The Legends."
|| Quarterlifeparty ||"This just popped into our mailbox this morning and me being the everloving shoegaze fan I couldn't help but do a post on it. Some really good washed out music to listen to with a jangly pop underlayer, sort of like a shoegazey Smiths, more for the guitar than the vocals. They have also been compared to UK's Field Mice and I'm sure you could name a ton of other influences. But the point here is not that they sound like someone else, but just that they are making some really good music."
|| My Life Is A Stereo ||"Pondering the Earth's pull on our bodies isn't the first thing to come to mind when I listen to this song (or the second...), but it is a splendid reminder of how grand music is, how it's bigger than us all.Oh! Custer has made an EP called States that can only be purchased through their record label, Series Two, a boutique operation based in Nebraska."
|| Let's Sexy Fighting ||"Well, the weather's heating up here on the west coast and spring's right around the corner. Need a band to pop onto the iPod for a hazy, nostalgic drive? Look no further than Lund, Sweden's Oh! Custer. Taking cues from their countrymen (and townsmen) The Radio Dept., Oh! Custer plays melodic indie-pop through the shoegaze filter and comes up with a silky smooth blend."
|| The Fast Life ||"This just popped into our mailbox this week, and even we don't have a clue about what shoegaze exactly supposed to be, we like what we hear - and that's everything we need to know about. Oh! Custer, a two man social project from Sweden, comes with spherical, partly melancholic appearing guitar-pop that makes you snuggle against everybody you will met during listen to their songs. But in the next moment you can't stop scampering around like Tigger, cause the music floods you with feelings of happiness and spiritedness. We're on easygoing now and roll around on daisied grassland."
|| The Culture Of Me ||"We've come to a breakthrough here at the culture of me as of right this minute. Listening to "Post", by Sweden's Oh! Custer, brought this on Here goes: the word "jangle" should be used as much as possible. Jangle, jangle, jangle. There. Phew. We mean, another Swedish band making unbearably beautiful, almost too-well-thought-out music that's drowned in reverb? You don't say. Is it really any wonder how in love we at the culture of me would be with this? Nope. Didn't think so. Hailing from the same town as The Radio Dept. and sounding shoegazey enough to have garnered a spot at the upcoming 2008 NYC Popfest!, Josef and Esbjorn (the two compatriots who make up this band) will soon be making their way into the hearts and minds of American listeners, thanks in large part to Nebraska CD-R label, Series Two. If you find yourselves NOT dancing around your room, singing along to the choruses in front of your record player (by the way, you should be doing this with most of the music coming from Sweden these days) you should totally be trying to figure out why that is. Oh! Custer pen instantly..."
|| What To Wear During An Orange Alert? ||"Is a two man social project that came into existence in the summer of 2005 when Josef and Esbjorn decided to start a band. The plan was at first more or less dismissed by everyone who knew these guys. The chances that they could produce anything were not considered to be likely and furthermore if they produced anything, could anyone listen to it? These sounds we make, are they traces of gravity? Oh! Custer is based in Lund, Sweden (hometown to fellow shoegazers The Radio Dept.)"
|| Sound Bites ||"Unfortunately I had to leave four songs into Swedish duo Oh! Custer's set 'cause they were definitely the most enjoyable set of the night. Typifying that Scandinavian indie-pop sound (loads of reverb, '80s-style drum machines, super-catchy melodies), they also were totally charming with an understated sense of humor. "This song is about the public transportation system in my hometown," was the intro for one song. "It's called 'late.'""
|| Music Snobbery ||"Flying in from the far off fantasy land of Sweden, Oh! Custer are a two member pop band who look like they are a bunch of Swedish guys who flew in from a far off land. The lead singer presses a few buttons on a computer to lay down a strong beat. Those royalty-free Garage Band beats always come in handy. They were endearing, and had decent pop ethos. The two of them weren't over-powered by the computer beats, so it them served well as a compliment. The lead singer explained that they always wanted to be a in punk band, and this was their version of it. Whatever you say, but I think they make an alright alternative to Peter, Bjorn and John but with more echoing effects."
|| Brooklyn Vegan ||"Of course, the hot ticket for Popfest is Love is All's appearance Thursday night at Cake Shop. I'm not sure why the organizers put the weekend's biggest draw in a place the size of a closet, but I'm sure for those 20 people in the first three rows will really enjoy it. For everyone else, you'll be able to say "they sounded great!" The show is sold out... if you've got tickets get there early and enjoy the other bands (including fellow Swedes Oh! Custer and NYC's The Secret History)."
|| Bluesbunny Independent Music Reviews ||"Back when the weather was better and it was fun to read the NME, one couldn't move for bands with a simple beat and jangly guitars, like sunnier versions of the Velvet Underground with long fringed hair and stripey jumpers. Swedish Duo OH!CUSTER recall that period with this release, a compilation of two EPS and in a limited edition of 200 to boot. With a tinny sound, guitars well to the fore, generally frantically strummed, and a mechanical drum beat thrashing behind reedy vocals this may only appeal to eighties hipsters but there are some gems among the eleven songs on display. "So Much Better" opens with bird sounds before the guitars and drum beat kick in propelling the song along. Stuck on a Cherry Red or Sarah Records sampler this would be seen as an undiscovered gem from that era. While this song is the highlight, band members Esbjorn Kjell and Josef Davidsson deliver several others that almost scale the same heights. The Jesus and Mary Chain come to mind although OH!CUSTER never summon up the sheer sonic density of the East Kilbride brothers. That said the general rule of thumb here seems to be the more frantic and distorted the guitar the better the song. Interesting nonetheless."
|| Indieville Reviews ||"There are hordes of lo-fi pop bands out there churning out chiming, C-86-influenced dream-pop, yet few produce songs as endearingly infectious as Sweden's Oh! Custer. States, an album comprised of two EPs, is a flatly excellent pop release, as well as the first record put out by what has become the now-prolific Series Two label. Awash in some joyfully overt shoegazer influences, the band weds anthemically jangling guitars with memorable vocal melodies. The first EP (States proper) is the more polished of the two, with several immensely listenable nuggets. The real fun is had when the reverb is turned up, as on "Post” and "So Much Better.” The second EP, Leaves, is considerably more lo-fi, although the brilliant melodies still glisten; "Spoiler,” the prime example, is delicious, reverberating bliss. Not every song hits all the right notes, particularly near the record's end (questionable drum machinery on "Late,” disorganized song structure on "Fields of Autumn”); however, the overall impression is largely positive. It must be conceded that Oh! Custer's songs sound more similar to one another that might be predicted, but this cohesion only leads to a consistently glorious album. So far, this is the best I've heard from Series Two Records."
