Gingerbread Dog reviews
The first thing that impressed us about this CD were the words. The album title (Gingerbread Dog) and the song titles ("Zipped Up," "Lemon Snaps," "Symbiosis," "Skibbledeebee")...yup, we realized right off the bat that these folks have a way with words. Baby Calendar is the duo of Tom Gorrio and Jackie Biver who have now been joined by drummer Arik Dayan. This trio plays playful inventive pop music with unusual song structures and wonderfully subdued vocals. If you aren't paying attention, you might mistake Baby Calendar as being just another underground pop band. But closer observation reveals that this band's music has real substance...and gets increasingly better the more you hear it. We can't help but be in love with the tunes on Gingerbread Dog. This is a great little album that will no doubt be embraced by a small yet extremely devoted base of listeners. (Baby Sue)
I can hardly wipe the smile off my face as I listed to Baby Calendar. Super fun music, with somewhat goofy, goodtime vocals and a get up and dance attitude. Releases like this make me happy to be a reviewer. I love the contrasting yet complimentary vocals styles of Tom & Jackie and the super sweet indie rock sounds. A few of my favorite tracks are "Traffic in the Tropics" which is a great stripped down melodic tune with guy/gal vocals and a super catchy sound throughout... (Grog, The Chickenfish Speaks)
Editor's pick! Softened indie pop melodies spread their collective wings with sugary sweet vocal harmonies amped up neatly throughout "Gingerbread Dog". An indie pop band with power pop ballads and thick layers of guitar, vocals, and drums, Baby Calendar impresses you with their witty songwriting and outrageous arrangements...Female and male vocals juxtapose but don't necessarily compete, instead they seem to sort of weave into one another become one singular voice. Excellent! (J-Sin, Smother Magazine)
Fifteen Year Old Sneakers reviews
With spiky, clever melodies and unexpected changes in tempo and style, Baby Calendar presents us with an original indie rock-rooted, twee-pop experience. The laid-back trio is Jackie Biver (vox, bass, keys), Tom Gorrio (vox, guitars), and Arik Dayan (drums), and their music is charming and awfully friendly... The music is honest and both simple and complex; an enthusiastic walk through the paths of friendship, forgiveness, musing, and growing up. With tones alternately playful, fanciful, melancholy, and hopeful, it's music full of encouragement and optimism... A cleverly crafted, luxuriously layered effort full of rich tones and genuine emotion, Fifteen Year Old Sneakers proves Baby Calendar have successfully found their niche in the musical realm. (Natalia Real, Rag Magazine)
On their followup to last year's debut EP, Your Move, indie rock group Baby Calendar offers an album custom-made for these slow summer days. Tom Gorrio's guitar work continues to gain complexity without losing its sense of euphoric zeal, while lead singer/bassist Jackie Biver's vocals have become an amalgam of gospel power and sweet virtue. Arik Dayan has come on board since the EP on the drums, improving revisited tracks ("Green Tea" and "Within Cell Walls") as well as contributing new songs. Standouts are the title track, "Industry," and their cover of Objects in Transit's "I Hate Meeces to Pieces." Fifteen Year Old Sneakers is another beautiful DIY effort from one of South Florida's finest. (Abel Folgar, Miami New Times)
Your Move reviews
This year opens with the deliciously blended harmonies of Baby Calendar. Jackie Biver and Tom Gorrio build a landscape of childlike innocence and wonderment with acoustic guitar, keyboard, and subtle percussion elements. The aural chiaroscuro of their vocals works well in this setting. Pop sensibilities are explored through stripped-down, midtempo arrangements. Even the cover art is a simple pencil drawing. Imagine a less hectic Mates of State and the call and response moments of early Simon and Garfunkel. The formula is best summed up in the opening line of "Hither": "Complete this melody with simple chords and you'll understand my words." Your Move's greatest strength is the minimalism of the tracks, which contrasts with the slightly more complex layering of the duo's voices. Biver has grown since her Para days, while Gorrio maintains a steady dry tenor without faulting into falsetto. Both together and individually, they generate great depth from their deceptively one-dimensional music. Standout tracks include "Green Tea" and "Within Cell Walls." The only tangible point against Your Move is the repetition within the "Outro" song, which runs a little longer than necessary. But such minutia does not detract from an otherwise flawless album.
